About Our Existence
Both of our Weekday
Education Programs--Parent's Day Out and Preschool--exist as a result of
Leawood Baptist Church's continued commitment to identifying and meeting the
needs of the community around us. We
have identified those needs and conditions as follows:
·
Parents find themselves increasingly isolated
within their neighborhoods and/or communities.
·
Parents find themselves physically separated from
the extended family which only a generation or two ago served as a support
system providing, among other things, appropriate childcare.
·
Parents need time away from their children;
children need time away from their parents.
·
Parents need to know that their children are being
cared for in a safe and nurturing environment.
·
Children need developmentally-appropriate
opportunities for socialization with their peers.
·
Children need continuity in care and education
through the preschool years.
As a church, we are proud of the reputation our
Weekday Education Program enjoys in the community and are grateful to have the
opportunity to meet the needs of hundreds of people each year. Please feel free to visit us and see for
yourself.

Philosophy
Leawood Baptist Church Preschool offers a developmentally
appropriate program for 3, 4, and 5-year-old children based on the studies
of Jean Piaget. We subscribe to the
philosophy that a child develops in an orderly and predictable way in his/her
own time sequence. As a result, we
use the High/Scope Curriculum which allows for key experiences using the child's
talents of observing, painting, listening, imagining, climbing, building,
and exploring. All concepts are learned
through a variety of experiences and are taught in an informal manner.
Each child is viewed as an individual who builds his/her knowledge
through these experiences with caring teachers.
In addition, the High Scope Curriculum promotes:
·
positive self-esteem
·
decision making skills
·
developmental growth
·
problem solving skills
These are accomplished through praise and the use
of positive reinforcement.
Program
Features
·
Movement is Fun Curriculum--provides a progression
of gross motor activities (30-minute sessions weekly).
·
Classes with a maximum of 14 students and two teachers
with degrees in Elementary Education.
· Fall and Spring Parent-Teacher Conferences and Kindergarten readiness recommendations.
· Annual highlights include: Christmas Sing, Mom's Coffee, Dad's Night, Mom's Visit, and Year-end Picnic.
·
Field Trips for the 4 and 5 year-old classes implement
specific goals from content areas of the curriculum. (Three-year-olds have special events brought
to the Preschool to achieve this goal.)
